Plated stater of the Corieltavi

Pictured here is what appears to be a perfectly genuine Ancient British gold stater measuring 17mm in diameter, which was recently unearthed by Peter Morris. However, genuine staters usually weigh 5 to 6 grams but Peter said this specimen tips the scales at only 3 grams.

This is a coin of the Corieltavi and is an example of the Domino type, which is listed in Ancient British Coins as number 1758. The obverse of this type can have the usual wreath and crescents but ABC mentions that it can be worn or completely blank. On the reverse is a disjointed horse facing left with what looks like a domino above.

This stater looks to be solid gold gut at 3 grams it must be a plated example with a base metal core. More of these seem to have been made imitating coins of the Corieltavi than any other series.

Valuation

The coin would grade better than Fine but it would be worth less in cash terms than a solid gold example. However, with a price range of £150-200 it should still be of interest to specialist collectors.
