Penny of Offa of Mercia

Robert Wittingham said he found the coin pictured here on one of his permissions. I was asked to provide a full ID and Robert said he was also unsure as to the possible value of his find.

The coin is a penny of Offa of Mercia. On the obverse is M OFFA REX in three lines. On the reverse, in two lines, is the name of the moneyer – in this case VVIL HVN (Wilhun).

This penny was struck at London during the heavy coinage of Offa. It’s an example of Chick type 212 and dates from circa 792-96. In the Standard Catalogue it listed amongst a group of coins as number 908.

Valuation

The obverse would grade about VF but the edge is irregular and has several small chips. The reverse isn’t as good but most of the detail is clear. It doesn’t score very high on eye appeal but being a rarity a likely pre-sale auction estimate would be in the region of £500-600.
