Penny of Offa of Mercia

Andy Keep asked for a valuation on this Anglo-Saxon silver penny. It’s a coin of Offa of Mercia, who was one of the earliest kings to have pennies struck bearing his name.

Most of the information I give is taken from The Coinage of Offa and His Contemporaries by Derek Chick and edited by Mark Blackburn and Rory Naismith.  Andy’s find has on the obverse OFF AREX in two lines separated by a beaded line.  The letter O in OFFA is lozenge-shaped. On the reverse is the moneyer’s name, DVD, in two lines separated by a beaded line with a fleur at each end. The first D has a cross either side of it.

This penny is an example of Chick type 28, of which there are varieties. The coin under discussion is nearest to 28d and 28e, which are light coinage pennies struck at London.

Valuation

There is slight damage to the edge but this penny is otherwise in near VF condition. However, the edge damage could reduce a pre-sale auction estimate to £800-1,000.
