Penny of King John, class VIc1

John Lashmar sent in this hammered silver coin and asked for a full ID and a valuation.

The coin is a voided short cross English penny, which has on the reverse a legend that reads +SAMVEL ON CAN. Therefore, Samuel is the name of the moneyer and Canterbury is the mint.

This penny is an example of class VIc1. The striking of class VI began when King John was on the throne and continued into the early years of the reign of Henry III. Examples are very scarce in comparison to voided short cross classes V and VII.

Valuation

There is a small weak area on the obverse and there are signs of slight porosity but this side is otherwise about VF. The revere isn’t quite as good and has been struck off centre. This is a rather rare coin, which to a specialist collector should be worth around £120.
