Penny of John

Leon Boulton is the finder of this voided short cross penny, on which I was asked for my opinion as to its possible value.

Leon’s find is a penny of John. On the reverse what can be seen of the legend reads +ANDR—-WIN so Andrew is the moneyer and Winchester the mint. It belongs to class 5b or 5c but I can’t say which as the letter X in REX does not show up.

Valuation

On the obverse nearly half of the legend is flat and roughly one third of the reverse is in a similar state. It’s a pity about the flat areas as the rest of the coin is in near VF condition. However, the faulty strike will have an impact on its possible value. As it stands I would price the coin at £80.
