Penny of Henry I
This coin was found a few weeks since by Richard Ward, who asked for a definitive ID and a valuation to pass on to the owner of the land from which it was unearthed.
Richard’s find is a penny of the third Norman king: Henry I. The coin is an example of the facing bust/cross fleury type, which is listed in the Standard Catalogue as number 1271.
On the reverse the legend is partly weak but if it was fully visible then the most likely reading would be +ALGAR ON LVNDE. Therefore, the moneyer is Algar and the mint London.
Valuation
The obverse of the coin would grade only Fair. The reverse is better but with a weak area. All pennies of Henry I are rare so even though the overall condition isn’t particularly good this specimen should still be worth around £150 to a collector.
