Penny of Elizabeth I
This coin was unearthed somewhere in Cumbria on 10 August by Steve Bartlett. I was asked to provide further details, including the date if possible and a valuation for a farmer.
The coin is a penny of Elizabeth I. I’ve seen lots of these as detecting finds but this one is a bit special. The mint mark on both sides is a sword (dating the coin to 1582) and pennies with this mark are much rarer than most others.
Valuation
The obverse is weak in places but the bust of Queen Elizabeth stands out well and overall this side would grade good Fine. The reverse is sharper and this side is in VF condition. In its present state of preservation it should be worth at least £150 to a collector who appreciates its rarity.
