Penny of Elizabeth I
This hammered silver coin was unearthed on 25 July by Martin Depear. I was asked to provide further details, including a valuation.
It’s a coin of Elizabeth I and in the description I received it was said to be smaller than a decimal 5p piece. Therefore, the coin must be a penny. It has mint mark martlet on both sides so it dates from 1560-61.
Valuation
I’ve seen lots of Elizabeth I pennies as detecting finds but this specimen is certainly one of the best. It is in VF condition and is struck on a flan that is close to perfectly round. In Fair condition it would have been worth £8-10 but as it is VF it could sell for up to £125.
