Penny of Edward the Confessor

John Hammer asked if I could identify the mint and moneyer on this Anglo-Saxon penny and give him some idea of its value. It was unearthed during a mid-week dig and John must have been very pleased when he first saw such a nice little coin.

This find is an example of Edward the Confessor’s small flan type, which dates from 1048 to 1050. On the reverse the legend reads +EDPARD ON CEN, so Edward is the moneyer and Canterbury the mint. In the Standard Catalogue it is listed as number 1175.

Valuation

The coin would grade nearly VF and has no obvious defects, so if it was offered for sale at auction a likely pre-sale estimate would be £220 to £250.
