Penny of Edward the Confessor
John Hammer asked if I could identify the mint and moneyer on this Anglo-Saxon penny and give him some idea of its value. It was unearthed during a mid-week dig and John must have been very pleased when he first saw such a nice little coin.
This find is an example of Edward the Confessor’s small flan type, which dates from 1048 to 1050. On the reverse the legend reads +EDPARD ON CEN, so Edward is the moneyer and Canterbury the mint. In the Standard Catalogue it is listed as number 1175.  Â
Valuation
The coin would grade nearly VF and has no obvious defects, so if it was offered for sale at auction a likely pre-sale estimate would be £220 to £250.
