Penny of Edward III
This recent find came in from Colin Pearson. It’s a particularly nice hammered silver penny of Edward III.
On the obverse the legend reads +EDWARD AnGL R DnS hYB with a pellet at the start and double annulet stops dividing up the words. On the reverse the legend reads CIVI TAS LOn DOn.
This penny was struck during the treaty period (1361-69) when Edward III agreed to drop his claim to the French throne. In 1369 the war resumed when Edward renewed his claim. In the Standard Catalogue pennies of this type are listed as number 1625.
Valuation
The reverse has been struck slight off centre but this penny is otherwise in VF condition with good eye appeal. To a keen collector it shouldn’t be worth any less than £125.
