Penny of Eadgar

Martin Jenson said he wants to sell this coin but has no idea of the best way to do it.

The coin is a penny of Eadgar (AD 959-75), which is listed as number 942 in J. J. North’s English Hammered Coinage.  On the obverse the legend reads + – – DGAR REX ANG around a small cross pattee. On the reverse, above and below three crosses, is AZHV NDH(O?). The moneyer will be OSMVND but it is AZMVND on the coin. This penny has been identified by Dr Martin Allen as the sixth example of type HD1 and the only one bearing the name of an unrecorded moneyer, who was probably employed at York. It has been recorded on the EMC at the Fitzwilliam Museum, where the find date is said to be 2004.

Valuation

This is an academically important coin but tits state of preservation leaves much to be desired. It would grade better than Fine but has some closed striking cracks in the edge, some edge loss and a large piece is missing.

Collectors are willing to pay very high prices for rarities but much less for defective specimens, however rare thy may be. In its present condition a likely pre-sale auction estimate on this coin would be no higher than £250.
