Penny of Aethelred II
This coin was unearthed by Phil Thomson, who wondered if it would be of any value in its present condition.
The coin is an Anglo-Saxon penny of Aethelred II and is an example of the second hand type. All that remains of the reverse legend is +TO, which is the start of the moneyer’s name. For the reign of Aethelred II this could be only one moneyer: TOCA. However, a moneyer of that name was an official at three different mints: Colchester, Cricklade and Winchester. The most likely candidate is Winchester but this is a possibility rather than a probability.  Â
Valuation
Sadly, only about 40% of the coin has survived he ravages of time, so it would be classed as a fragment. In terms of its value, an auction estimate would be set at £30 to £40. It might not be worth much in cash terms but only a few detectorists will be able to say they have ever unearthed an Aethelred II penny in any condition.
