PAXS type penny of William I
Stewart Beech said this coin turned up recently in the area around Hull. He must have been very pleased when he first saw it, for it is a penny dating from the Norman period.
The coin is a PAXS type penny of William I. Numismatists are still debating whether this type was struck late into the reign of William I or early in the reign of William II. Lot of records of both periods are available to researchers but no-one has ever discovered evidence in relation to a precise date for this type of penny.
On the reverse the legend reads +EDPI ON IINDNI, so Edwine is the moneyer responsible for the issue of this penny. The mint signature is rather blundered but this coin will have been struck at London.  Â
Valuation
The obverse would grade about VF, the reverse VF. It is well struck and has some eye appeal. If offered for sale at auction then a likely pre-sale auction estimate would be £500 to £600.
