PAXS type penny of William I

Stewart Beech said this coin turned up recently in the area around Hull. He must have been very pleased when he first saw it, for it is a penny dating from the Norman period.

The coin is a PAXS type penny of William I. Numismatists are still debating whether this type was struck late into the reign of William I or early in the reign of William II. Lot of records of both periods are available to researchers but no-one has ever discovered evidence in relation to a precise date for this type of penny.

On the reverse the legend reads +EDPI ON IINDNI, so Edwine is the moneyer responsible for the issue of this penny. The mint signature is rather blundered but this coin will have been struck at London.

Valuation

The obverse would grade about VF, the reverse VF. It is well struck and has some eye appeal. If offered for sale at auction then a likely pre-sale auction estimate would be £500 to £600.
