‘Ryedale’ Anglo-Saxon Bronze Hanging Bowl

This almost complete Anglo-Saxon hanging bowl was found by detectorist Chris Ulliott on 5 February 2023 in Ryedale, North Yorkshire. It was recorded at the PAS as YORYM-59523A where it was considered a Find of Note of Regional Importance.

Hanging bowls have their roots in the Roman period and as the PAS record says “were highly valued objects in the Anglo-Saxon cultures of eastern Britain and were typically included in furnished burials, contexts that date them to the mid sixth to late seventh century“.
