London groat of Henry V
The detectorist who sent in this coin wished to remain anonymous but said it was part of his collection. He had identified it as a London groat of Henry V, on which he required a valuation.
The coin has a star on the king’s shoulder. On the obverse there is a quatrefoil after hENRIC and a similar mark after POSVI on the reverse. I would identify this Henry V groat as being an example of series C, which is listed in the Standard Catalogue as number 1765.
Groats of Henry V used to be quite rare but over recent years I have seen several as detecting finds. This is a case of a coin that was once rare out of the ground but has proved not to be rare in the ground.   Â
Valuation
The coin is well centred and the reverse would grade VF. The obverse is weak in places and would grade only about VF. In its present condition my price range would be £250-280.
