London groat of Henry V

The finder of this hammered silver groat, Chris Mcloughlin, said it was unearthed on 16 December. Chris believed it to be a coin of Henry V but asked if I could confirm his ID.

Firstly, this is a London groat of Henry V. It’s an example of series C and is listed in the Standard Catalogue as number 1765.

Groats of Henry V used to be quite rare but I’ve seen several specimens as detecting finds. This is a case of a coin type that used to be rare out of the ground but has turned out to be not particularly rare in the ground.      Chris’s find is weak in parts of the obverse legend but this side is otherwise in about VF condition. The revere is better and would grade near VF.
