London groat of Edward IV

John Parkins told me that this coin turned up during a club dig but he was unsure of its exact identity, so he asked if I could help out.

The coin is a London groat of Edward IV, wo came to the throne in 1461but lost it in 1470 when Henry VI became king for the second time. However, Edward regained the throne in1471 and reigned until his early death in 1483.

This groat has mint mark pierced cross on both sides so it will have left the mint during the second reign of Edward IV. It’s an example of type XVII and will have been struck during the period 1473-77.

John’s find would grade good Fine but it has been clipped and this detracts from its overall appearance. However, it’s still a reasonably decent example of the reign and type.
