Half Noble of Richard II

The finder of this hammered gold coin wished to remain anonymous.  He knew it was a half noble of Richard II but wanted further details and a valuation.

The coin has a saltire over the sail on the obverse, a letter R in the centre of the reverse and was struck at London. It is an example of class IB and is listed in the Standard Catalogue as number 1665.

Valuation

Many of the Richard II half nobles that come onto the market are clipped but this specimen looks to be full weight. The reverse has been struck off centre but the obverse is centrally struck and all the legend is visible. The surface looks to be slightly uneven but overall the coin would grade good Fine or slightly better. In its present overall condition a pre-sale auction estimate would be in the region of £2,200-2,500.
