Half noble of Edward III

This hammered gold coin came in from Mike Ruczynski but it was unearthed many years since. Mike said I had identified it soon after it was found but he had lost the paperwork, so I had to start again.

Firstly, this is a half noble. The obverse is only Fair and much of the legend can’t be seen but by blowing up the image I could make out WAR DEI, so this must be a coin of Edward III.

The reverse is better and would grade Fine. There is a Lombardic letter E in the centre, a pellet either side of the fleur de lis on the top arm of the cross on the reverse and there is a fleur de lis by the lion in the first quarter. With the characteristics listed above the reverse is most likely to be series Gf of the pre treaty period.

Valuation

This half noble is quite rare but the overall state of preservation lets it down. The reverse is quite decent but, as already stated, the obverse is only Fair. In its present condition a likely pre-sale auction estimate would be £500 to £600.
