Half merk of James VI of Scotland
The finder of this coin asked to remain anonymous. He said it was unearthed from farmland near Inverness and it has been reported to and recorded by the authorities in Scotland.
The coin is a balance half merk of James VI of Scotland. It is a type that was struck from 1591 to 1593 and examples very rarely turn up as detecting finds.
This find is in near VF condition but has a very noticeable defect: it has quite a large piece missing from the edge. Sadly, the date was on the missing piece so I can’t say exactly when this half merk was struck.   Â
Valuation
The missing date would deter many collectors from bidding for this coin. However, someone who just wanted to acquire a half merk of this type might be willing to pay around £200 for this example.
