Groat of Mary Tudor
A detectorist signing himself as Steve asked for a valuation on the hammered silver coin pictured here in order to pass on a figure to the owner of the land on which it was found.
The coin is a groat of Mary Tudor. I’ve said before that a huge number of groats must have been struck during Mary’s reign as they are quite common as detecting finds. However, the majority that turn up are very worn and/or damaged in some way.
Valuation
The legend is weak in places on both sides but the centres are much better, especially the head of Mary on the obverse. As it stands it should be worth around £150 to a collector.
