Groat of Mary Tudor
Philip Clark sent in the images of this hammered silver coin and asked if I could provide him with a full ID.
The coin is a groat of Mary Tudor, examples of which turn up regularly as detecting finds. This suggests that a huge number must have been put into circulation.
The obverse would grade Fine but Mary’s face looks rather ugly. This might be due to flaws in the flan in the crucial area. The reverse is about VF but has staining on the edge from 9 to 2 o’clock.
It a pity about distortion to the queen’s face but I’ve seen far worse groats of Mary than this one.
