Gold stater of the Iceni
The detectorist who unearthed this coin wished to remain anonymous but wanted a valuation on his find.
The coin is an Ancient British gold stater. It’s a coin of the Iceni and is an example of the Norfolk Wolf type. In Ancient British Coins this stater is listed as number 1393 and in the Standard Catalogue it is number 30.
On the obverse is a wreath, cloak and crescent design, which can be seen on several Ancient British staters. On the reverse, standing on a decorated ground line, is a wolf facing right with several large pellets above. More often than not with this type there is a pellet and a crescent below the wolf but on this coin there is no crescent.
Valuation
The reverse of this stater is well struck and would grade VF+. The obverse is not as good and is weak in places. In its present condition a likely pre-sale auction estimate should be in the region of £1,200.
