Gold halfcrown of Elizabeth I
This 16mm in diameter hammered gold coin is a recent find that came in from Ian Darke, who wanted a valuation to pass on to the owner of the land from which it was unearthed.
The coin is a gold halfcrown of Elizabeth I with mint mark cross crosslet on both sides, which dates it to 1560-61. In the Standard Catalogue the type is listed as number 2524.   Â
Valuation
As I’m always saying, the most important factor in relation to the commercial value of any coin is its state of preservation. This coin has three small cracks in the edge and some scuffing to the obverse. The reverse has been struck a bit off centre and the shield of arms is slightly weak in two quarters.
Ian said that when the coin came out of the soil it needed straightening. Therefore, the flan could be uneven. The coin looks as if it might grade about VF but has several defects, which, added together, would have an impact on its value. As it stands, were it offered for sale at auction then a likely presale estimate would be £1,200-1,500.
