Expanding cross type halfpenny of Edward the Confessor

Norman Merritt had already identified this cut halfpenny as an example of the expanding cross type of Edward the Confessor. However, I was asked if I could work out the mint signature.

On cut halfpennies the amount of information that can be gleaned from the reverse depends on how they have been cut. Sometimes only the moneyer or the mint can be identified, sometimes it is possible to name both.

What remains of the legend on the reverse of this halfpenny reads ANFO (the end of the mint signature) and +PVL (the start of the moneyer’s name). Therefore, the mint will be Stamford and the moneyer is most likely to be Wulfwine.

Valuation

The reign, type, mint and moneyer add up to this coin being quite rare. It is rarer still as a cut halfpenny but would be worth much less in cash terms than a whole penny.
