Edward III halfpenny
This little hammered silver coin (15mm in diameter) was sent in by Paul Tongue, who said it was found in Nottinghamshire and I was asked to provide a valuation.
The coin is an Edward III halfpenny, which has on the obverse a legend reading +EDWARDVS:REX:An. Â On the reverse the legend reads CIVI TAS LOn DOn (there is a stop after the last letter n) so it was struck at London. This halfpenny has characteristics that point towards it being struck during the treaty period (1361-69). In the Standard Catalogue it is listed as number 1534 but this example has colon stops on the obverse instead of pellets.
The catalogue price in Fine condition for halfpennies of this type is only £30, which suggests that they are fairly common. In actual fact they are very scarce.   Â
Valuation
Paul’s find is well struck and would grade slightly better than Fine, so to a collector it should be worth at least £40.
