Durham mint penny of Edward IV

Colin Smith asked for a full ID and a valuation on this hammered silver coin in order to pass on the information to the owner of the land on which it was unearthed.

The coin is a Durham mint penny of Edward IV, which was struck for the profit of Bishop Booth. It was issued during the second reign of Edward IV and has a letter D in the centre of the reverse. On the obverse the coin has crosses above the king’s crown and another cross on his breast. In the Standard Catalogue pennies of this type are listed as number 2117.

Valuation

The coin is flat in places but good enough to grade Fine for the issue. It is quite scarce so it shouldn’t be worth any less than £30 to a specialist collector.
