Durham mint penny of Edward III

Pictured here is another find that was unearthed by Ray Kyte 50 years since. Detecting machines were not as good at that time but it would have been far easier to gain permission to search land.

Ray’s find is a Durham mint penny of Edward III. At the top of the obverse is a square initial cross and if the whole of the legend was visible it would read EDWARDVS REX ANGLI. On one arm of the long cross on the reverse is the head of a crozier, which is the staff of office of a bishop. The legend on the reverse reads CIVI TAS DVNE LMIE.

All the preceding information added together points towards this penny being struck during the fourth coinage, pre treaty period, series C. At the time it was struck Thomas de Hatfield was Bishop of Durham.  In the Standard Catalogue the coin is listed as number 1592.

Valuation

This penny is badly struck, the end result being a coin that is half flat and half Fine. It’s not particularly scarce but examples turn up far less often than most of the pennies of Edward I. In its present condition my price range would be £15-20.
