Denarius of Trajan

This Roman silver coin is another specimen from the group assembled over many years by Darren Clarke.

The coin is a denarius of Trajan, whose dates are AD 98-117. On the obverse is a laureate head of the emperor facing right and a legend reading IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS V P P.

On the reverse is the standing figure of Annona, holding in one hand grain ears over a modius and a cornucopia in the other hand. On this side the legend reads S P Q R OPTIMO PINCIPI.  

Denarii of this type were struck at Rome during AD 106-7. In volume II of David Sear’s Roman Coin and Their Values they are listed as number 3165.

Valuation

The edge is a bit irregular and this isn’t a rare type but this is a nice example with eye appeal so my price range would be £60-80.
