Denarius of Commodus

This Roman silver coin was sent in by Rob Warwick, who asked for a full ID and a valuation on his find.

Rob’s coin is a denarius of Commodus, whose dates are AD 177 to 192. The legend on both sides is not altogether clear and the readings I give are what they would be if everything showed up.

On the obverse, facing right, is a laureate head of the emperor and a legend that reads M COMM ANT P FEL AVG BRIT. On the reverse the standing figure of Virtus holds the figure of Victory in one hand and a spear and the top of a shield with the other hand. The reverse legend reads VIRTVT AVG P M TR P XII IMP VIII COS V P P.

In volume II of David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values denarii of this type are listed as number 5722. They were struck at Rome during AD 187.

Valuation

On the reverse the figure of Virtus is a bit weak but the coin is otherwise in about VF condition. My price range would be £50-60.
