Centenionalis of Crispus
Mike Ruczynski sent in this Roman coin to be identified and valued. Last week we had a similar find of Constantine he Great but this one was struck for Crispus.
The coin is a billon (base silver) centenionalis. On the obverse is a laureate bust of Crispus facing right and a legend that reads IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES, which indicates Crispus was Caesar under Constantine I when this coin was struck.
On the reverse, with a globe above it, is an altar inscribed with VO TIS XX; below are the mint letters (PTR) for Trier. The legend on this side reads BEATA TRANCVILLITAS.
In volume IV of David Sear’s Roman Coins and Their Values the exact type isn’t listed but Mike’s coin is nearest to number 16730. The year of striking will be AD 322.
Valuation
The coin would grade slightly better than VF but as it is fairly common my price range would be no higher than £15 to £18.
