Calais halfpenny of Henry VI
This hammered silver coin was found by Steve Hirst, who asked for a full ID and a valuation on his find.
The coin measures 16mm in diameter so it is an unclipped halfpenny. On the obverse there is an annulet either side of the king’s neck and on this side the legend reads +hENRICVS REX AnGLIE.
The reverse design is the usual type (cross pattee with three pellets in each angle) and on this side the legend reads VIL LA CAL ISIE with a double saltire stop after LA.
The preceding information adds up to this coin being a halfpenny of Henry VI, which was struck at Calais dung the annulet coinage.
Valuation
I’d grade this coin no higher than about Fine. However, it’s a good size and most of the detail is clear so my valuation figure would be £25.
