Anglo-Saxon silver sceatta Series W

This coin was unearthed from a pasture field in Dorset by Keith Brown on the 26th of this month. Keith knew it was an Anglo-Saxon silver sceatta but asked if I could provide any more information.

On the obverse is a three-quarter length figure facing right with a long cross pommee in each hand. On the reverse is a cross crosslet on a saltire cross. These characteristics mark out this sceatta as being an example of series W, type 54. In the Standard Catalogue this type is amongst those listed as number 787.

Most of the detail is visible on the obverse but score marks cover half the coin. Another minus point is the edge chip from 4 to 6 o’clock. The reverse is better and would grad near VF.

Valuation

This is a rare type but the defective obverse will have an impact on its possible commercial value. In its present condition my highest price range would be £250-280.
