Anglo-Gallic demi-sterling of Edward III
The hammered silver coin pictured here measures 14mm in diameter and was found by Fiona Gurney. Someone has already helped her with an ID but she wanted my opinion on what it might be worth.
On the obverse is a crowned bust facing slightly to the left. There is a lion below and the legend reads EDWARD REX AnGL.
On the reverse is a cross with a crown in each quarter and on this side the legend reads DVX AQV TA nIE. In each of the incurved ends of the cross is a trefoil. The preceding information adds up to the coin being an Anglo-Gallic demi-sterling. The obverse names Edward III as King of England and the reverse names him as Duke of Aquitaine. In Coins of Scotland, Ireland and the Islands coins of this type are listed as number 8048.
Valuation
Anglo-Gallic coins rarely turn up as detecting finds in England. This demi-sterling is very rare and the first I have heard of as a detecting find. It would grade nearly VF but in one quarter the edge is rather ragged. As it stands, my valuation range would be £350-380.
