Ancient British gold stater of the Dobunni
This find was sent in by William Hands, who said he believed it to be half of an Ancient British gold stater.
On one side is the base of a tree-like object and on the other side a wheel below the bottom section of a horse. Therefore, the obverse and reverse point towards the design that appears on uninscribed and inscribed staters of the Dobunni. However, as only the bottom section of the reverse can be seen I cannot pin it down to a type.
Valuation
The images show that the coin has a base metal core with a covering of gold. It would be disappointing to find only half a stater and even more so to then discover it was plated rather than solid gold.
This is quite an unusual find, which should be of interest to specialists in Ancient British coins. In terms of market value, I’d suggest a price range of £150-180.
