Ancient British Bronze Unit

Ian Darke is the finder of this Ancient British bronze unit. On the obverse is a large helmeted head facing right and on the reverse a right-facing small head, above which is a large cock. Ian said he has not heard of a similar coin being found in the area where this specimen turned up.

In Ancient British Coins bronze units like this one are catalogued under the Regni as the Chichester Cock type (number 737). In the Standard Catalogue they are listed under Early Uninscribed Coinage as number 61

Valuation

The outer edge of this coin shows up as bronze but the surfaces are dark blue-black in colour. It’s basically in Fine condition but the overall appearance of the coin might put off some potential buyers. However, a collector who didn’t mind the curious colour should be willing to part with £50-60 in order to acquire it.
