Advertising check of Dr Joseph Woodward’s museum of anatomy
Glyn Peak unearthed the rather unusual find featured here. It is an advertising check, of which there is a huge series – mostly dating from the 19th century.
This check advertises Dr Joseph Woodward’s museum of anatomy, the address being 29, Paradise Street in Liverpool. It is 26mm in diameter, made of brass and he maker was Park & Alldridge. I assume that if you visited Dr Woodward’s museum you would be given one of these checks.
Valuation
A group of four Liverpool advertising checks was sold at auction quite recently. Two pieces in the group were similar to Glyn’s find but the pair would both grade VF. The whole group sold for £80 and due to the lower grade of preservation of Glyn’s Liverpool example I’d price it no higher than £15.
