Canterbury halfgroat of Henry VII

Stephen Whalley asked for help in identifying the hammered silver coin pictured here, which is a recent detecting find.

The coin is a Canterbury halfgroat, which was part of a joint issue of Henry VII and the Archbishop of Canterbury. It’s an example of class IIIc with no stops and mint mark tun on both sides. Within the inner circle on the reverse is a legend reading CIV TAS CAn (the A struck over O) TOR.

This joint issue of halfgroats must have added up to a huge number as examples are probably the most common detecting finds of Henry VII. Having an over-struck letter on the reverse would add interest to a specialist collector.

Stephen’s find is slightly weak in one quarter but is otherwise in VF condition with good eye appeal. It isn’t a rarity but it’s in better condition than many other examples I have seen as detecting finds.
