Series F Sceatta
This is the first of two Anglo-Saxon silver sceattas, which were unearthed by Kevin Waleford. A full ID was needed for both coins.
On the obverse is a bust with a plain body but with a stylish curved brim to the headgear. There is a cross pattee behind the body and an indistinct legend in front of it.
Roughly in the centre of the reverse is a cross pattee, which has an annulet at each side, three annulets below and TOT above. A cross pattee marks the start and end of a blundered legend.
The preceding information adds up to this sceatta being an example of series F, which is listed in the Standard Catalogue as number 781. A number of varieties are on record.
On the obverse the face is weak but this side is otherwise in Fine condition. The reverse is better but slightly off centre.
