Quarter noble of Edward III

The hammered gold coin pictured here was unearthed on the 12th of October. The finder, Ian Darke, knew it was a coin of Edward III but he asked for a full ID and a rough idea of its commercial value.

Within the inner circle on the obverse is a quartered shield and on the reverse is a floreate cross. On both sides there are pellets in the spandrels inside the inner circle. In the centre of the reverse there is a solid pellet, which is surrounded by four annulets.

All the preceding information adds up to the coin being a quarter noble, which was struck during the treaty ‘A’ period. It’s an example of class A2, which is number 1501 in the Standard Catalogue and is discussed in more detail by Lord Stewartby on page 258 in English Coins 1180-1551.

Valuation

Both sides have been struck slightly off centre and the edge is a little irregular but the coin is otherwise in Fine condition. As it stands, my price range would be £350 – 400.
