Stater “Norfolk Wolf left facing type” of the Iceni
The finder of this Ancient British gold coin wished to remain anonymous. It measures 18mm in diameter, it is 6 grams in weight and was believed to be a Norfolk Wolf left facing stater. I was asked if I could confirm the type and provide a valuation.
On the obverse is a wreath, cloak and crescents. On the reverse is a wolf facing left with a bird on its rump, a trefoil below and several pellets in the field. Therefore, this gold stater is an example of the Norfolk Wolf left facing type of the Iceni. In Ancient British Coins this coin is listed as number 1399 and is said to be very common. In the Standard Catalogue it is number 31.
Valuation
The obverse is weakly struck or struck from a worn die. The reverse has been struck slightly off centre but is otherwise nearly VF. In its present state of preservation a likely pre-sale auction estimate would be £280-320.
