Edward III London noble

The finder of this hammered gold coin wanted to remain anonymous but asked for a detailed ID and a valuation.

This is an Edward III London noble, of which there are many varieties.  On the obverse the letter C and E are open, the letter N is reversed and the fleur de lis on the side of the ship are positioned 1-2-2-1. On this side and on the reverse the stops are single annulets.

At the start of the legend on the reverse is cross type 1. In the centre is a large, open letter E, the others are closed; the letter M is Lombardic and the letter R has a wedge-shaped tail.

The preceding information adds up to this gold noble having an obverse of series B and a reverse of series C. As such it is a rare coin.

Valuation

The flan is a bit uneven and it is slightly scuffed in places but the coin is otherwise in about VF condition. If offered for sale at auction in its ‘as found’ condition then the pre-sale estimate should be around £3,200.
