Halfpenny of Alexander III
Rob Warwick said he unearthed this coin a couple of weeks since and he now needs a valuation in order to pass on a figure to a landowner.
Rob’s find is a second coinage halfpenny of Alexander III of Scotland. On the obverse is crowned head facing left and a legend reading +ALEXANDER DEI GRA. On the reverse there is a mullet of six points in two angles and on this side the legend reads REX SCO TOR VM+.
Valuation
The coin is round, well struck and is far rarer than the Alexander III pennies of this coinage. It would grade nearly VF but there are scratches or surface stress marks on the king’s face, which will have an impact on its possible value. If the marks are scratches then I’d say £90-120 but if they are stress marks in the silver then £120-150.
