Quarter noble of Edward III
This hammered gold coin was found some time since by Richard Millar. I was asked to provide a full ID and a valuation.
The coin is a quarter noble of Edward III, examples of which are one of the least rare hammered gold coins unearthed by detectorists. However, this specimen is a rarity.
Richard’s find was struck during the treaty period. In the legend on both sides the letter X is the curule type. On the reverse there is an annulet in the centre, which is present only on coins struck at Calais. Quarter nobles struck at Calais during the treaty period are far rarer than those struck at London.
Valuation
Both sides are slightly off centre but the coin s otherwise in VF condition with no visible defects. It is a nice looking coin, on which a likely pre-sale auction estimate would be around £750-850.
