1000 reis gold piece of John V of Portugal

The coin pictured here came in from Jackie Bennett. It’s a foreign gold coin, which was part of the collection formed by Jackie’s late father.

The coin will measure about 18mm in diameter and is a 1000 reis gold piece of John V of Portugal. It is dated 1722 and was struck at the Lisbon mint.

At the time this coin was struck the Portuguese ruled over Brazil, in which were mines that produced a great deal of gold. These mines were the main source of gold used in many European countries. Lot of Portuguese and Brazilian gold coins circulated in England and examples are not particularly rare as detecting finds.

Valuation

This 1000 reis piece dated 1722 is not a rarity. It’s in quite good condition but as it has been pierced it would sell for no more than its gold weight. As I’ve said previously, if selling anything made of gold then do so through a bullion dealer as they work on a lower profit margin than most other buyers of gold.
