Edward III penny of London
A detectorist signing himself as Tom asked for more information on the hammered silver coin pictured here.
Tom’s find is an Edward III penny of London, which was struck during the third (Florin) coinage (1344-51). On the obverse the legend isn’t altogether clear but the most likely reading will be +EDWA R AnGL DnS hyB. The abbreviated name and titles are divided up by annulet punctuation marks. On the reverse the legend reads CIVI TAS LOn DOn.
Valuation
Man varieties of the pennies struck between 1344 and 1351 are on record. Tom’s example isn’t a rarity but neither is it one of the most common types. The reverse is only Fine but the obverse is better so my price range would be £30-40.
