Halfgroat of the Commonwealth
Mike Ruczynski said he unearthed this coin a few days back and he asked for a valuation on it.
The coin is a halfgroat of the Commonwealth. Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector of England a few years after the execution of Charles I. Cromwell died in 1658 and his son, Richard, then became Lord Protector.
However, Richard lacked the support than had been given to his father. In 1660 Richard resigned his position and left England. This led to the Restoration and the crowning of Charles II.
Valuation
The halfgroat found by Mike is well struck on a round flan but has noticeable crease marks, which detract from its overall appearance. As it stands, my price range would be £30-40.
