Halfgroat of Henry VII
This hammered silver coin came in from John Lashmar with a request for a full ID and a valuation.
John’s find is a Canterbury halfgroat of Henry VII. It has rosette stops in the legend on the obverse and mint mark tun on both sides. The reference for the type in the Standard Catalogue is number 2210.
Halfgroats of this type were issued jointly by King Henry and the Archbishop of Canterbury. It must have been a huge issue, for this type of halfgroat is the one that turns up most regularly as a detecting find.
Valuation
The obverse would grade Fair to Fine, the reverse is better but struck off centre. It is also slightly short of flan. In its present condition my highest price estimate would be £25-30.
