Gold stater of the Corieltavi

This is the first of these two coins from a finder who asked to remain anonymous. Both have been reported to and recorded by the PAS and the finder wanted my opinion as to their possible value before considering selling them.

Coin number one is an Ancient British gold stater, which was struck for the Corieltavi.  On the obverse is DV MN between two lines split by a stylised wreath made up of bricklike elements; there is a wheel in two quarters and beaded rings in the other two.

On the reverse is a horse facing left, with pellets below the head, a pellet under the tail, TIGIR above and SENO below. In Ancient British Coins this type of stater is listed as Dumnocoveros Tigirseno type (number 1951) and in the Standard Catalogue it is number 414.

Valuation

The obverse is slightly off centre but this gold stater is well struck, all thee detail is clear, it has great eye appeal and would grade EF for the type. This would be of great interest to Ancient British enthusiasts, especially those focusing specifically on coins of the Corieltavi. If it was offered for sale at auction I would not expect the pre-sale estimate to be any lower than £5,000.
