Continental Sterling of William of Hainaut

This hammered silver coin was unearthed by Terry Shaw on the 22nd of October.

The coin is a Continental sterling. It’s an example of the crockard type, so-called because the head on the obverse has a crocket of roses in its hair.

On the obverse the legend reads +GVILLS: EPISCOPVS. The design of the reverse is the same as pennies of Edward I but the legend reads CAM ERA CEN SIS. Therefore, this coin was struck for William of Hainaut, who was Bishop of Cambrai from 1292 to 1296.

Valuation

Terry’s find is slightly weak in places but would grade nearly VF for the type. In its present condition my price range would be £70-80.
